Can't locate one of our email updates in your inbox? Email updates will be posted below for your reference. Please notes, posts are listed in reverse-chronological order, with the most recent update at the top of the page. We hope you find this convenient!

Please Note: Nearly all program updates will come in the form of email communication. It is critical for you to add honors@honorsperformance.org to your list of “approved senders” with your email client to avoid missing important updates from the Series. This is particularly important if you did not receive an email from us regarding your acceptance. If you change your email address, please be sure to let us know.

We will send an email update to all Finalists any time we have new information to share. It’s extremely important that you receive and carefully review each of our updates so you are fully prepared for your performance in Sydney. Below is copy of each update sent to Finalists thus far. The Series cannot be responsible for missed email communications or updates, and it is the responsibility of the Finalist to respond to requests for information leading up to your Series experience on or before the communicated deadlines.

July 16, 2019 - Pre-Program Updates

The 2019 Honors Performance Series is quickly approaching! We know that this will be a week to remember for all involved. Included below is additional information to ensure that you are fully prepared for your time in Sydney. Family Program participants will receive a similar update regarding their arrangements.

Please review the following information carefully and call or email us with any questions.

Travel
If you are traveling on the Series Group Flight from LAX, you will receive a separate email next week with details about how to find our staff when you arrive at LAX airport.

Please check your email for details about your current airport shuttle reservation status. If the information is incorrect, please submit or resubmit your travel plans at www.honorsperformance.org/sydneytravel. There is ample space on the shuttles, but it is helpful to know who we should look for at the airport. Please note, we are not able to manually enter travel information in our system. You must submit your travel plans via this online form so we may make the appropriate arrangements.

If you are using Series transportation from Sydney Airport on July 31, you should meet our program staff outside the Arrival Gate at SYD Airport, just past the final quarantined customs area. For your reference, click here to view arrival instructions and a map of SYD. Our staff will be holding signs with the Honors Performance Series logo. They will assist you in getting on the shuttles. Only Finalists and registered Family Program participants may ride the shuttles. Program staff will verify names before loading the shuttles. If you have any difficulty locating our staff, please contact our Tour Central (Emergency Support Team) office at +61 283 107 527 (July 29 – August 5 ONLY) and they will be happy to connect you.

If arriving by car, by train or into an alternate airport, Finalists and Full Access Family should report directly to the Intercontinental Sydney located at 117 Macquarie Street, Sydney 2000. Check-in will be located on the second floor of the Intercontinental.

If you are using Series airport shuttles for your return, you will be responsible for boarding one of our shuttles at the appropriate time to meet your flight. We recommend that you plan to arrive at the airport 3 hours prior to your flight. The trip to the airport should take about 1 hour, so plan to take a shuttle that departs 4 hours before your flight time. We will have staff on-site during your airport check-in in case you encounter any problems. Your safety and security are our number one priority, and our staff is present to ensure that you are comfortable during the program.

Responsible Parties
Finalists may be checked out from their Chaperone Group during the program (for meals and sightseeing) by the Responsible Party or the authorized adult(s), aged 25 or older, listed on their accounts. Finalists intending to depart the program on their own (NOT using a Series shuttle to SYD or checking out with Family Program participants or an Authorized Adult) must receive prior written authorization from the Responsible Party on their account. If an Authorized Adult is in Sydney, they MUST come to the hotel to check out with the Finalist's Chaperone.

Please check your email for information about the authorized adult(s) are listed on your Finalist’s account. To add authorization, you may do so by sending an email to honors@honorsperformance.org from the Responsible Party email address listed on your Finalist’s account.

Chaperone Assignment
Please see your email for information about your assigned program Chaperone. Your chaperone will meet you at the Intercontinental after you check-in with the program. They will contact you prior to the program to introduce themselves, exchange contact information, and get to know you. We have asked all Chaperones to reach out and schedule a call with you within 3-5 days. We encourage you to check out their Chaperone bio (see email for link).

Program Check-in
The Series check-in will take place on the second floor of the Intercontinental. Finalists may check-in to the Series beginning at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, July 31. Please Note: Official hotel check-in is not until after 4:00 PM While you may check-in to the program beginning at 9:00 AM, your hotel room will not be ready until after 4:00 PM Once our program check-in begins, we will have a secure area for your bags. While your hotel room is being prepared, you will embark on a sightseeing bus tour of Sydney with your Chaperone. When your room is ready, you will receive your hotel key from your Chaperone.

When you check in, you will be given a welcome packet that includes a nametag and lanyard, a wristband, a luggage tag, and general program information. You will be required to wear your nametag and wristband during all Series activities. The wristbands help us identify registered Series participants and will be checked throughout the week. The nametags have emergency phone information and these, along with the wristbands, are just two of the security measures that we take to ensure a safe and smooth week for all involved.

Hotel Information
During the program, you will be staying at the Intercontinental Sydney. Below is additional information on the hotel:

  • Address: 117 Macquarie St, Sydney NSW 2000
  • Phone: +61 2 9253 9000

Rooming
Please see your email for confirmation regarding the arrangements we've made for your rooming at the Intercontinental.

Itinerary
Select the appropriate link below to view your pre-program itinerary:

Please note that final arrangements are still being confirmed and plans are subject to change. You will receive a new itinerary when you check into the program; while we don’t anticipate significant changes, you should use the itinerary you receive when you arrive in Sydney as your official schedule for the program.

Packing
Click here to access a suggested packing list. In addition, please keep in mind the following as you pack for your trip:

  • Performing at Sydney Opera House is an honor, and the dress code for the Honors Performance was established to provide a formal, uniform look, without requiring students to purchase robes. Clothing items should be neat, dressy, and modest, reflecting the formal nature of the event. Clothing should not be casual in appearance. Please reference the packing list linked for a reminder of the concert dress code.
  • All performers must bring their sheet music and a plain, black music folder to hold it.
  • There is no specific dress code for the rehearsal days, though Finalists are encouraged to dress appropriately. Sweatpants and pajama pants should not be worn at rehearsals. Attire for the Finalist Celebration is casual, modest, and appropriate. Finalists are encouraged to wear their concert attire.
  • Instrumentalists – remember to bring your instrument (and any associated items, such as bows, mutes, etc.)! Percussionists need to bring mallets, sticks, etc. only.
  • You will want to bring spending money for all meals, souvenirs, and other miscellaneous expenses. We recommend US $50 a day for meals. Debit or credit cards with a chip can be used to pay directly at vendors and participants will generally incur a service charge for the exchange fee. Participants should check with their bank to learn the fees for international use.
  • It is winter in Sydney. Temperatures average 46-58o F in July/August. Please dress appropriately for the weather, including comfortable walking shoes, coats, and hats. Bring a water bottle.
  • Participants should bring plug adapters for their chargers, blow dryers, straighteners, etc. Larger electronics (blow dryers, beard trimmers, etc.) will also require a voltage converter. Plugging in a large electronic device without an adapter or voltage converter can damage the appliance.
  • Please leave valuables and electronics at home. The Series assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen items.

Important Reminders

  • Please reference your email for the current statuses of your Medical Release and Behavior Contract. Please remember that these forms are required for your participation and should be submitted online as soon as possible if we do not already have them. Failure to submit the below forms can result in forfeiture of sightseeing opportunities and/or removal from the program.
  • All participants 18 years of age or older must have a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license.
  • As Finalists will be involved with activities during the daytime and evening hours, it is best for Finalists to plan to place calls home rather than receiving calls from home.
  • To ensure a good experience for everyone, you are expected to be on time and participate in all activities and rehearsals.
  • Your peers and the Conductors are counting on you to arrive with your music (notes, rhythms) learned thoroughly and completely.

Behavior
In addition to the guidelines set out in your Behavior Contract, rules will be established by the Chaperones and passed on to all program participants upon your arrival. Any violation of these rules may result in disciplinary action, which includes sending the participant home at the family’s expense. A Chaperone is present at each location visited by the participants; however, at selected locations participants may have the freedom to explore on their own. To make the trip enjoyable and safe for everyone, it is important for each participant to exhibit responsible behavior at all times.

Concert Announcements
The Honors Performance will be the concert of a lifetime! In order to ensure a positive experience for both performers and audience members, please review the following important concert notes with any loved ones who plan on attending the Honors Performance:

  • Intermission: There will be no intermission during the Honors Performance.
  • Cell Phones: Please switch off your cell phones and other electronic devices. Refrain from texting or answering calls during the performance.
  • Recording Devices: Taking photographs, audio recordings, and/or videos during the Honors Performance is strictly prohibited. Please note that Opera House ushers will confiscate any devices used in violation of this policy. The Honors Performance Series offers rehearsal recording CDs (audio recording of the concert repertoire; can be pre-reserved at honorsperformance.org/memorabilia) and ensemble photographs (taken inside the Concert Hall; a link to purchase photos from the photographer will be emailed out after the program) to help Finalists and their loved ones remember this exciting experience.
  • Exiting the Opera House: At the conclusion of the performance, Finalists will depart immediately using the stage doors and will return directly to the Intercontinental. Other concertgoers are asked to remain in their seats until all Finalists have exited the Concert Hall.
  • Following the Performance: Due to timing constraints at the Opera House, attendees must exit the Concert Hall immediately following the Honors Performance. Those who wish to congratulate Finalists following the performance should return immediately to the Finalist hotel. Finalists may greet loved ones at the Intercontinental.

We are happy to answer any questions prior to your departure if you contact our team at +1-800-503-0807 or honors@honorsperformance.org. If you need to reach us during the program ONLY, please contact our 24-hour Tour Central office (Emergency Travel Support) at +61 283 107 527 (if you are calling from Australia) or +1-800-999-4542 (if you are calling from the United States).

We look forward to hosting you in Sydney and to sharing this experience with you!

Remember, your Conductor prepared rehearsal notes and they are posted in the Music section of the Update Page. Please review them carefully as you prepare. We are looking forward to hearing your beautiful music very soon!

Important Deadlines: Please note that the items below are required on or before June 30; failure meet these deadlines may result in your removal from the program.

  • Program Listing: Please reference your email regarding the name as it will be listed in the Honors Performance program. If this is incorrect, you must reply to our email with your correct name no later than June 30.
  • Pre-Travel Forms: The below forms will provide the Series team with critical information and are required for your participation. Please click the links below to submit this information to us no later than June 30.

      • The Medical Release also allows you to authorize adults to check you out from your Chaperone throughout the program. Finalists may be checked out from their Chaperone group during the program (for meals and sightseeing) by the Responsible Party or any Authorized Adult(s), aged 25 or older, listed on their Medical Release.
      • Our records indicate that the following adults are already authorized on your account, and DO NOT need to be additionally listed on the Medical Release form: (see email for personalized information)
    • Finalist Travel Information: Please provide us with a summary of your travel plans. June 12, 2019 - Sydney Opera House Concert Ticket Update

We have received word from Sydney Opera House that tickets for the Honors Performance on August 4 will go on sale tomorrow, June 13! Our team receives a number of questions regarding performance tickets, which we have summarized below for your review. Please contact our team by return email or at +1-800-503-0807 if you have any questions not answered below.

  • Where do I buy concert tickets?
Tickets must be purchased via the Opera House Box Office (we suggest using their online Calendar of Events). As a reminder, the concert is on Sunday, August 4. The Honors Performance will be published on the online calendar as soon as tickets are available for purchase.
  • Can I purchase concert tickets from the Honors Performance Series?
Each Family Program enrollment includes a priority seat to the Honors Performance for that individual registrant. Individuals wishing to obtain a ticket without enrolling in the Family Program must do so through the Opera House (see details above); priority tickets are available only as part of the Family Program.
  • Do Finalists receive tickets to the Honors Performance?
Each Finalist receives one concert ticket for him/herself (to watch the other Honors Ensembles before and/or after performing). Any loved ones wishing to see the performance must purchase tickets through the Sydney Opera House box office or by enrolling in an Honors Family Program.
  • Can loved ones still enroll in the Family Program?
We do have a few remaining spaces available in both Family Programs. As online enrollment is now closed, anyone interested in registering should call our team at +1-800-503-0807 for assistance.

Finalists, we hope you have enjoyed rehearsing thus far. We are all looking forward to a beautiful concert in early August!

May 23, 2019 - Sheet Music, Part Assignments, etc.

We are pleased to share that your sheet music is now available for download! We know that you are excited to start practicing, and this email will provide details on which part you should prepare for each piece as well as how you can access your sheet music and rehearsal notes from your Conductor.

Part Assignments, Sheet Music, and Rehearsal Notes:

Each Finalist's notification email is personalized with the part you should prepare; please reference your email for this information so you can begin rehearsing your assigned part(s).

To access your electronic sheet music, visit the Music section of the Finalist Update Page (password “DownUnder19”) and click the "Sheet Music" link for your ensemble.

Your conductor's rehearsal notes are additionally available on the Music page of the Finalist Update page. Please prepare all pieces thoroughly using your Conductor’s Notes. You should be prepared to sing the correct notes and rhythms so your limited rehearsal time on-site can be focused on coming together as an ensemble and preparing the highest level performance possible. Your Conductor and the rest of your ensemble are counting on you!

Honors Choir Finalists only: If you live in the US or Canada, paper copies of your sheet music are being mailed to you and will arrive in June. To help you prepare, we have additionally arranged for you to have access to online music tracks. Links to instructions on accessing and using these files can be found in the Music section, along with your sheet music. You should plan to bring your sheet music to Sydney with you, bound in a simple black binder, to use during rehearsals.

Upcoming Final Payment Deadline:
Please remember that June 7 is the deadline to remit your final program balance, finalize any special rooming requests, and pay for any rooming or account upgrades. Please click here to double-check your account balance; unless you have already arranged for an extended payment plan with our team, your balance must be paid in full on or before June 7.

Sydney Opera House Concert Tickets:
We are awaiting final word from Sydney Opera House as to when tickets for the Honors Performance will go on sale to the public. We will send another update email prior to the on-sale date. As a reminder, one priority ticket to the Honors Performance is included with Family Program registration; any loved ones not participating in the Family Program should purchase tickets through the Sydney Opera House box office.

2020 Application:
We are now accepting applications for our 2020 High School and Young Adult programs! As Sydney Opera House will close for renovations shortly after your performance in August, we are excited to be hosting programs at “the crown jewel of European concert halls” – the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria – in 2020, in addition to our annual Carnegie Hall programs. Use your Customer Account Number in place of an Invitation Number when applying to bypass the nomination requirement. Applications completed by June 26 are eligible for first-round review and a reduced application deposit.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team with questions. We can be reached by return email or at +1-800-503-0807 between 8:30a and 5:00p Eastern time, Monday through Friday.

Have fun practicing!

May 3, 2019 - Program Updates and Deadline Reminders

We hope you are enjoying familiarizing yourselves with the program repertoire. Your Conductors are finalizing part assignments while we await the delivery of sheet music. Later this month, we will email a link to the sheet music so Finalists can begin rehearsing in preparation for a beautiful Sydney Opera House performance!

In the meantime, we are touching base today with several updates regarding your participation.

  • Payment Deadline – If you have not already settled your program balance in full, please remember that the final two payment deadlines are today, May 3, and Friday, June 7. Click here to review your balance and remit payment ($325 for Finalists; $175 for Full access Family; $60 for Weekend Family).
  • Pre-Order a Commemorative CD – If you would like to have a memento of the program repertoire, we encourage you to pre-order a CD prior to the program. Due to licensing restrictions, our commemorative audio CDs are recorded during rehearsals and are mailed out approximately 10-12 weeks after the performance. Concert photos will additionally be made available 2-3 weeks after the program. Click here to pre-order your CD or order other Series memorabilia.
  • Travel Documentation for Non-Australian Citizens – As outlined on the Finalist Update Page, Finalists and Family Program participants who are not Australian citizens must possess a current passport and arrange for an Australian visa. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to review your passport status and expiration date, which must be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of your trip. Depending on your citizenship, most Series participants can obtain a tourist visa through Australia’s Electronic Travel Authority website.
Please Note: All arrangements and costs associated with the necessary travel documentation are the responsibility of the participant; the Series is not responsible for processing delays or decisions on visa applications made by the relevant embassies or consulates.

As always, our team is available to assist with any questions by return email or by phone at +1-800-503-0807 (Monday through Friday, 8:30a to 5:00p Eastern).

We know you are eager to learn about the music our Honors Ensembles will perform this summer, and we are pleased to announce that the Conductors’ selected repertoire is now available to view on the Music section of the Finalist Update Page (password “DownUnder19” one-word, case-sensitive)!

Your conductors are looking forward to making beautiful music with you this summer and have selected these pieces to highlight your talent and range. Click here to review your balance and remit payment ($325 for Finalists; $175 for Full access Family; $60 for Weekend Family) if you have not already. Payments are managed through WorldStrides, our program logistics partner.
Our team is making plans for your time in Sydney, and your participation is contingent upon timely payment of all installments due. If you have fallen behind on your payments, please do your best to bring your account current no later than the April 1 payment deadline. Our team will be reviewing accounts in early/mid April and may cancel participants who have not adhered to the payment schedule. If you are concerned about making your payments, or would like to discuss alternate payment options, please reach out to our team and we will be happy to work with you.
  • Travel Logistics & Group Flight Availability – If you have not already booked your flights, we recommend you do so as soon as possible. If you would like to take advantage of program airport shuttles in Sydney, follow the guidelines outlined in your acceptance materials (also available on the Finalist Update Page) when booking your travel plans. We do have a handful of seats left on our Chaperoned Group Flight to and from LAX; additional information is available on our website.

  • Payment Deadline – The third program payment is due this Friday, February 1. November 27, 2018 - Deadline Reminders

Greetings from the Honors Performance Series! We’re writing today with the first of several email updates that you will receive over the next few months. Please review the important information below and contact our team if you have any questions.

  • Upcoming Deadlines – Please keep in mind the following important deadlines:
    • Finalist Confirmation Form due Friday, November 30: If you have not already, please provide us with some important confirmation, such as your rooming requests and preferences. Please note that, due to the volume of forms received, it may take up to 7-10 business days following receipt of your Confirmation Form for our team to update your account.
    • Program Payment due Friday, November 30: $325 for Finalists; $175 for Full Access Family; $60 for Weekend Family. Payments will be managed through WorldStrides, our program logistics partner.
  • Group Flight Availability – (Finalists and Full Access Family ONLY):
    • We know that, for some, flying alone internationally can seem daunting. We have additionally received requests about opportunities for participants to be able to fly together from the US to Sydney (and back). While we cannot arrange escorted flights from individual airports throughout the country, we’re pleased to have made arrangements for a limited block of seats on direct flights between Los Angeles to/from Sydney to escort participants on the international leg of their journey. Participants may therefore choose to meet Seriesstaff in (and then say goodbye from) Los Angeles instead of traveling the entire journey on their own. These arrangements are optional and the cost is therefore not included in the program cost. Reservations for the limited seats that we have on this chaperoned flight will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
    • Please visit honorsperformance.org/sydney-air for more information about the Group Flight Program.
  • Family Package Availability – As mentioned in our prior update, space will be reserved for all loved ones who register for a Family Package on or before November 30. After this date, additional family registrants will be accepted on a space-available basis. We hope your family and friends will take part in this exciting experience with us in Sydney!
  • Facebook Group – If you haven’t already, we hope you will join in the conversation in our 2019 High School Sydney Opera House Finalists Facebook group.

November 16, 2018 - Family Program Details

Congratulations again on your Finalist's selection to the 2019 High School Honors Performance Series! Performing at Sydney Opera House is once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and the experience promises to be an inspiring one for all who participate. The Series proudly offers two Family Programs, which allow family members, friends, and other advocates to share in the Honors Performance Series with their Finalist. We have received considerable interest in the Family Programs and wanted to share additional information as you consider your family’s participation.

The Honors Family Programs are designed to enable supporters to stay in Sydney and attend exclusive program events only available to Finalists and Family Program participants. These events include:

  • Priority Concert Seating: Reserve your seat before tickets go on sale to the public; all Family Package participants are assigned a priority seat for the performance at Sydney Opera House.
  • Exclusive Program Access: Attend activities only available to Family Program participants, including observing your Finalist interact with their Conductor during a rehearsal, a reservation aboard the Finalist Celebration Cruise, a sightseeing bus tour of Sydney, touring with your Finalist in Sydney’s historic district, and a full-day guided sightseeing tour.
  • Lodging and Support at the Series Hotel: Enjoy proximity to program events and a dedicated support team to answer your questions about the program and the city. If desired, Family Program participants can elect to room with their Finalist (extra costs apply for Finalists staying with fewer than three-to-a-room).
  • Transportation for Program Events: Take advantage of Series transportation, including program airport shuttles (arrival shuttles for Full Access Family only), private motorcoaches for the Honors Performance and Celebration Cruise, and guides to walk you to and from other program activities. Additionally, Full Access Family Program participants can take advantage of the Series Group Flight Package (optional; details on our website) and embark on the international leg of the journey to Sydney with Series staff.
  • Emergency Support: Rest easy knowing your participation is backed by the Series’ 24/7 emergency office in Manhattan, our “Doctors on Call” arrangement with the George Washington University Hospital, and embedded medical and accident insurance for each participant.
  • Enjoy Sydney: Since most of the Honors Performance Series rehearsals are closed, there are other sightseeing activities and admission vouchers included with the Family Programs to supplement your time.

As Family Program participation is offered only as a full package, individual components cannot be arranged for those not enrolled. Non-priority tickets for the Honors Performances will be available to the public through the Sydney Opera House box office beginning 60 days prior to the performance. We are unable to accommodate requests for individually purchased tickets to be seated in the priority seating section.

We anticipate having space available for both the Full Access Family Program and the Weekend Family Program for those who register on or before November 30. Thereafter, registration will be allowed as space is available. Friends and family wishing to participate in a Family Program will need to register individually online. Finalists should not register for Family Programs, as they are already registered for the Finalist program.

For complete program details and to register online, please click here to visit our website.

Please note that, although there is space available on both of these programs, they are beginning to fill. In 2018, both Family Programs sold out, so we encourage you to act quickly if you wish to share in this exciting experience. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team with any questions. We look forward to hosting you in Sydney!

Finally, our offices will be closed beginning at noon Eastern on Wednesday, November 21, and will reopen on Monday morning, November 26, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. On behalf of the entire Series team, we wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
